Apple Card is all the simplicity of Apple, in a credit card. Apple Card lives in the Wallet app on your iPhone. You can apply and use right away, in as little as a minute. It’s the first credit card that allows you to see your offer before accepting, and the only credit card that actually encourages you to pay less interest.

APPLE CARD
DESIGN LIBRARY

Wallet, Cards, Ledgers, and Payments.

A comprehensive and flexible design asset library that serves as the foundation for creating mockups and prototypes for Product and Marketing managers, in order to conduct guided user studies and inform future product direction.

Individual UI components and data coalesce into a catalog of flows, states, and interactions – forming detailed product documentation and specifications for Apple Card, Cash, Pay, and more. These deliberate investments culminate in rich, interactive, on-device prototypes for existing and exploratory UX, features, and enhancements.

I created, fostered, and maintained this library across multiple releases, teams, and shared projects. I’m proud of every pixel and pattern in this library – an invaluable resource for product design and development, with far-reaching ancillary benefits to other teams, Wallet, and to Apple.

APPLE CARD
WEB APPLICATION

Apply for Apple Card. Use right away. Now on the Web.

A web-based credit card application designed, built, and launched entirely during the early parts of the COVID-19 Pandemic. As the world ground to a halt, projects and priorities shuffled. A web application felt achievable and principled in this alien environment, making Apple Card accessible to more people – especially those dependent on credit impacted by the unprecedented job loss and ongoing global crisis. Launched successfully in November 2020 with a slate of updates and enhancements, the web application drove a dramatic increase in new accounts while maintaining an overall healthy account mix.

For many customers, this was a lifeline. For me, it kept me sane in a very difficult and surreal era. For the team: we launched in a pandemic, the business grew as a result, and now an agile web service exists to experiment and test with – something not previously possible with the Wallet Application due to the pace and cadence of iOS releases.

Easily Verify Your Identity

In the unusual case where a customer is stepped up and more information is needed to create an offer, the team built an ID upload system leveraging existing and upcoming tech to quickly and easily upload any accepted state-issued identification. With the ability to upload a file or from a connected camera (and eventually your iPhone), we built out an easy to use wizard to verify your identity and start using your Apple Card immediately.

Leaving Room for Improvements

Throughout the development of the Apple Card web application, the team planned to leave room for improvements and quality-of-life enhancements. Our third goal for the web application was to do more than the Wallet application so that we could learn more. This included remotely provisioning the Apple Card credential to approved devices, easy QR code sign in and apply, and a post-application survey if the customer declined their Apple Card offer – all capable of testing and gaining new insights for the entire application.

Less is More

It was vital to maintain the simplicity of Wallet’s application – by far the most straightforward and transparent credit card application in the industry. A combination of constraints and user testing led the team to slowly evolve the application to having discrete steps, with application fields pre-populated from the customer’s Apple ID if applicable. Our prospective customers loved this new application format, with it testing positively and driving new accounts for iOS and non-iOS users alike.

Product Goals

As the team explored growth opportunities to drive more accounts, it became clear we needed a device-agnostic web application. The main goal was to make Apple Card even more accessible to people. And given the nature and pacing of the web (compared to iOS), we saw the opportunity to do even more. We decided another goal was to build customizable components and conduct user testing in a way not possible in the Wallet app. This included relevant value props, marketing claims, special promotions, Apple Online Store checkout information, and more. Lastly, the team sought out some areas of improvement that the web could facilitate better than iOS, many being queued up for testing shortly after launching.

APPLE CARD
mDL INTEGRATION

Leverage Mobile Driver’s License to Verify Identity.

Wallet’s goal is to replace the physical wallet, conveniently and securely. We’ve made progress towards that goal, but one credential is crucial  – identity, or a Mobile Driver’s License (mDL). With governments, regulatory bodies, and private sector titans working on the frameworks, the end-user applications have product people excited! A universal-method of presentment and acceptance of a verified ID allows for entirely new magical and trustworthy experiences.

The team was super excited to explore first-party integrations, such as one-tap applying for Apple Card with a provisioned ID, autocompleting application fields, or presenting an ID if additional verification is needed.

Prototypes were built to demonstrate feature potential and to conduct user studies –  to better understand unique behavior with an ID, gauge sentiment about the reduced user agency and control within a financial contract, and mismatches between the user, their physical ID, and the issuing authority.
